The West Virginia Board of Education awarded Raleigh County’s Independence Middle School a total of $300,000 — $100,000 per year over three years — as part of its Innovation Zone and Drop-out Prevention Grant.

Raleigh County earned a “B” in smoke-free regulation, according to the State of Tobacco Control 2012 scorecard released by the American Lung Association. Although Raleigh, Fayette, Wyoming, Greenbrier, Monroe and Nicholas counties all ranked “B” on the scorecard, the state as a whole did not fare so well.
